While there are definitely some free NLEs out there that really aren't worth your time, the landscape has changed dramatically in the past few years in the "freemium NLE" market. This is where free editing software programs come in. If you want to experiment with editing before making a pricey commitment, or maybe you just don't think you'll need all the bells and whistles that expensive NLEs offer, it can be painful paying out potentially hundreds of dollars without needing to. I don't really like being in the mode of an apologist for BMD but whenever I see someone complain that the free version is lacking some feature for which they would have to pay $299 to get the Studio version, it really bugs me. The fact that they provide a free version of Resolve and Fusion is a mystery to me, particularly when you consider that the free versions are barely crippled.Įven more incredibly is the fact that they now sell the Studio version of Resolve for $299 (down from $999 which was already a great deal - no annual fee and so far, even major upgrades like 12.5 to 14 were free for Studio users). However, Black Magic Design is not a non-profit organization. I understand that there exists a community of individuals who donate their time for all sorts of free stuff. There are those who believe that software should be free. ![]()
